Cad is obair óige Ghaeilge ann?

Nuair a ghlacann daoine óga páirt in obair óige bíonn deiseanna gan deireadh acu bualadh le daoine nua, eispéireis nua a bheith acu agus a gcuid scileanna pearsanta agus soisialta a fhorbairt i dtimpeallacht oideachais neamhfhoirmeálta.  Tá na buntáistí atá ar fáil do dhaoine óga agus iad ag glacadh páirt in obair óige le feiceáil trí na deiseanna breise a bheas ar fáil dóibh, na caidrimh a thógann siad le daoine eile trí obair óige agus an mhuinín agus forbairt phearsanta a thagann ó bheith páirteach in obair óige.

Do pháistí agus do dhaoine óga atá ag freastal ar ghaelscoileanna nó ag foghlaim teanga na Gaeilge, is mór an tábhacht a bhaineann leis an obair óige.  Ní amháin go saothraíonn na páistí agus na daoine óga na buntáistí ceanna is atá le feiceáil san earnáil Bhéarla, ach is riachtanach an ról atá ag an obair óige do soisiailiú teanga na Gaeilge agus í á fhoghlaim ag daoine óga.  Cuireann deiseanna breise do dhaoine óga chun Gaeilge a labhairt i measc a gcairde go mór lena scileanna teanga agus tugtar seans dóibh an Ghaeilge a úsáid i dtimpeallacht neamhfhoirmeálta, tumoideachais.

Léirigh comhairliúchán déanta ag Fóram na nÓg (2014) nach raibh aon deis eile ag 97% daoine óga a d’fhreastal ar chlub óige Ghaeilge a gcuid Gaeilge a úsáid taobh amuigh na scoile.  Cuireann obair óige Ghaeilge seirbhís riachtanach ar fáil do pháistí agus do dhaoine óga agus iad ag baint sult as na bunatáistí móra a bhaineann le obair óige agus an deis acu a gcuid scileanna teanga a chleachtadh agus a neartú fosta, rud a chuireann go mór leis an oideachas dátheangach.

What is Irish-medium Youth Work?

Participation in youth work provides young people with endless opportunities to meet new people, experience new things and develop their own personal and social skills in a non-formal educational environment.  The benefits of taking part in youth work for young people are seen through the increased opportunities which they will avail from, the relationships which they build with others through youth work and the confidence and self-development which comes from taking part in youth work.  

For children and young people attending Irish-medium schools or learning the Irish language, youth work takes on an added importance.  Not only do the children and young people participating in the youth work benefit from all the advantages that are seen in the English-medium sector, but youth work plays a vitally important role in the socialisation of the Irish language for the young people learning it.  The opportunity for these children and young people to use Irish in an informal environment among their friends adds greatly to their linguistic skills and allows them to experience the language outside of a formal school setting in an informal, immersion environment.  

A consultation carried out by Fóram na nÓg (2014) revealed that 97% of young people attending an Irish-medium youth club did not have any other opportunity to use their Irish outside of school.  Irish-medium youth work provides an essential service for children and young people as they gain the enormous benefits that are associated with youth work and also have the opportunity to expand their language skills and capitalise on the benefits of a bilingual education.
